The Heart Behind Fern & Flour

By Dani Seideman·September 14, 2026

Something she once shared with her mom became part of how she started finding herself again.

At 21 years old, Becca is a wife, a mom to a 10-month-old little girl, and the face behind Fern & Flour.

She's creative by nature. She loves gardening, scrapbooking, DIY projects, reading and, of course, baking.

But Fern & Flour came from a much deeper place.

A few years ago, Becca's mom was battling cancer. Becca became her full-time caregiver, spending all of her time taking care of the woman who had always taken care of her.

Her mom passed away in December of 2024.

Afterward, Becca suddenly had a lot of time she didn't know what to do with. She had spent so much of her life caring for her mom, and when that was gone, she needed something to keep herself busy while navigating through her grief.

So she started baking. Baking was something Becca already loved, but it was also something she had shared with her mom growing up.

One of her favorite memories is actually a really simple one. Becca, her mom and her sister were baking together when her mom dropped an egg on the floor. They laughed so hard about it, and all these years later, it's a core memory Becca still thinks about.

As Becca continued baking, it became a way for her to work through her grief. Soon there were cookies, brownies and sourdough filling the kitchen.

Then Becca became a mom herself.

Her pregnancy was incredibly difficult, and during labor, Becca nearly lost her life. She made it through and welcomed her little girl, but becoming a mother without her own mom there was hard.

She struggled with postpartum depression and found herself grieving her mom in a whole new way.

And once again, she baked.

Eventually, Becca decided to see if this thing she loved so much could become something more.

She took her baking to the Lewiston Farmers Market. Her first one ended in success. That was the moment Becca started thinking, maybe I can actually do this.

Fern & Flour began to grow.

Even the name has a little story behind it. Fern comes from Becca's love of gardening, and Flour is a play on her last name, Fowler.

Today, she's creating everything from her popular brown butter cookies to lemon berry treats, which have become a bestseller.

I think knowing Becca's story makes you look at her little baking business differently. Fern & Flour isn't just something she decided to start one day.

It came after losing her mom. After becoming a mom herself. After a traumatic pregnancy and delivery. After postpartum depression. After trying to figure out what life looked like when so much of it had changed.

And somehow, something she once shared with her mom became part of how she started finding herself again.

Now Becca gets to make those same kinds of memories with her own daughter.

Someday, her little girl will remember standing in the kitchen next to her mom, making brownies, licking the spoon or laughing over a mess they made together.

Just like Becca does.

And maybe that's one of the most beautiful parts of her story.

Her mom isn't here to see Fern & Flour or watch Becca become the mom and business owner she is today. But you can still find pieces of her there.

Even if it's just a little flour on the counter and the memory of an egg on the floor.
